of the Polish Academy of Sciences
Globalization, development of knowledge based economies, challenges emerging from integration process and from business cycle disturbances in the world economy are among the most important factors calling for the staff of the highest analytical skills and capable of strategic thinking. Knowledge going beyond standard spectrum of competencies, gained at regular higher studies, is required to cope with the complex economic and social reality nowadays. Meeting this need the Institute of Economics Polish Academy of Sciences offers Ph.D. Studies in Applied Economics.
The Institute of Economics Polish Academy of Sciences is a research institution with the right to confer the doctoral degree, habilitation degree and the title of professor in economics. It is a recognized centre of renowned scientific achievements focused especially on conntemporary economic processes and economic policy.
The profile and the curriculum of the Ph.D. studies meet standards of the leading world educational centers and requirements in economic and business teaching in Poland. They also reflect the research activity of the Institute.
The Curriculum contains the following subjects:
- Economic theory and economic analysis. Micro- and Macroeconomics, Industrial organization (120 h)
- Quantitative methods in economics and business (90 h)
- Firm theory and analysis (45h)
- Capital markets (15 h)
- Globalization, economic integration and economic organizations (15 h)
- Economic systems – comparative studies (15 h)
- Economic policy (30h)
- Seminars and workshops (40 h)
Curriculum is subject to minor changes.
The main research areas covered by Ph.D. thesis are:
- Economic growth, technological progress, foreign investments, human capital and knowledge based economy
- Consumer theory and marketing strategies and competitiveness
- Industrial organization, mergers and acquisition
- World economy, globalization and regional integration
- Firm analysis, firm innovation policy and implementation
- Institutions and market regulations
- Economic policy and systems’ transition and transformation
- International finance, financial and capital markets, venture capital, banking
- Ownership, groups of interests and wealth distribution
The program of the studies contains close to 400 contact hours of lectures, laboratories, seminars and workshops in total and delivers to students advanced courses in micro and macroeconomics, industrial organization, firm theory, applied mathematics and econometrics. The time sequence and organization of the courses allow for independent and detailed planning of the Ph.D. thesis in relatively short time even for those students who had rough ideas regarding their focus of interests when their applied to the studies. All students who have successfully passed the scheduled exams (“abiturients”) get a certificate of the III level higher studies, which in itself is a document of intrinsic value. The Ph.D. degree is conferred by the Scientific Council of the Institute and Ph.D. certificate is given by the Institute Authority only to those who have successfully submitted their thesis and defended it publicly.
Both the Institute's full time scholars as well as professors from outside who graduated from renowned world universities (MIT, Cambridge, Munich BU, Warsaw University) form teach the Ph.D. program.
For international students' convenience the program is divided into four 95 hours long modules delivered twice a year in a month long sessions during the first two years of studies. It is assumed that during the third year students occasionally take part in workshops to present their drafts (parts of the thesis) in order to get suggestions for improvements and corrections when working on the final version of the thesis. During the entire period of their studies, students remain in touch with their supervisors.
